Artist’s Statement
My Painting focuses on controlled pouring, splattering, dripping, throwing of paint, and the reaction to these chosen combinations of techniques. Creating a multitude of pours and layered hand-painted marks, result in intricate images that are both controlled and organic in appearance. With strategic color choice, and adjustment in density, I create numerous layers that show depth. I create these variations by altering the consistency of the acrylic paint and acrylic mediums I use. Through extensive experimentation, I achieve an array of effects and mixtures. I establish a cohesive collection of layers that are read as a whole and individually as a sign of process. Though lines, shapes, and colors may mimic actual organic qualities, there are no preconceived images in my work. While the actual pouring, dripping, and throwing of painting cannot be precisely controlled, without direct hand application, I can approximate the direction and location of marks, and I am very conscious of each mark and color used. Another quality to my work, that ties in the more loose elements, is meticulous hand painting. This detail work brings a dimensional, organic, and atmospheric presence to my paintings. By layering carefully painted lines and shapes the uncontrolled is tied to its opposite.
I have participated in shows and exhibitions both in cities across Ohio including Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Jackson Township, Kent, and North Canton. Working out of the studio in my home, I am able to continue my creative process non-stop.
Short Biography
Born in Guatemala City, Guatemala in 1986 David was adopted as an infant to the wonderful parents Arthur and Judith Whiteman. With a natural creativity David’s desire to do art was fanned by his artist Grandmother, Doris Hill. With her support and that of the rest of his family David developed a passion for art.
In third grade David tried out and was accepted into Pleasant View School for the Performing Arts. Covering grades four through eight David attended all five years majoring in drama and fine art. Art would remain his concentration till his graduation from GlenOak High School in 2005. During this time David also developed a passion for the sport of Figure Skating. A competitor for a number of years and then coach to the sport, art and skating both became doors for his creativity. While attending Kent State University David continued to coach and often used his aesthetic training in school in aspects of his coaching career. Graduating from Kent State in 2011 cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree David began his career as an artist. He now, solely, focuses on Art.
